PWInsider has a report on the rumors that Lucha Underground is attempting to block certain wrestlers from appearing on independent and international dates for other promotions. Currently, the green light for a fourth season of Lucha Underground has not been handed down yet. Based on the report, the party that’s responsible for wrestlers getting their dates blocked is actually MGM, the distributor of Lucha Underground.
Lucha Underground is owned and produced by United Artists Media Group in conjunction with Mark Burnett Productions. The promotion has not had any tapings since spring 2016, where seasons two and three of the promotion were filmed back to back. However, talents for Lucha Underground are still under contract, and the contracts more closely resemble a traditional TV series instead of professional wrestling.
Lucha Underground management was asked about the contract issues and specifically if MGM or parties involved with LU had approached anyone or issued any legal warnings to wrestlers who tried to appear elsewhere. LU management was also asked about where the company stood on contracted workers appearing in other promotions. The following statement was released:
“While Lucha Underground contracts contain normal exclusivity clauses, we fully understand our performers’ desire to participate in non-televised international bookings. Assuming our performers are complying with their Lucha Underground agreements, we have generally been supportive of their desire to work internationally and have even changed shoot dates to accommodate certain talent’s international commitments. There are many performers on our roster who desire to work internationally on non-televised shows, and MGM would never improperly block a cast member who is honoring his or her obligations to Lucha Underground from earning that type of income during a long production hiatus.”
