New Japan Cup Day 1 (3/5) Results

New Japan Pro Wrestling's New Japan Cup kicked off early this morning in Japan, and saw major upsets right out of the gate. Both Bad Luck Fale and Toru Yano picked up huge victories over Okada and Hiroshi Tanahashi respectively.
The New Japan Cup will continue through March 15, and we'll be bringing you the results with each event.

New Japan team wins NOAH Tag Titles

New Japan tag-team The Killer Elite Squad of Lance Archer and Davey Boy Smith Jr. won Pro Wrestling NOAH's GHC Tag Team Titles over TMDK of Mikey Nicholls and Shane Haste at today's NOAH event in Nagoya, Japan. This is part of New Japan's stable Suzuki-Gun ongoing invasion storyline of Pro Wrestling NOAH that started back at New Japan's Wrestlekingdom 9 PPV on January 4 at the Tokyo Dome with NOAH's TMDK and Naomichi Marufuji, along with New Japan's Toru Yano defeating Suzuki-Gun in an 8-Man Tag. Suzuki-Gun leader Minoru Suzuki is set to challenge GHC Champion Marufuji for the title at a NOAH event in March.

ROH - New Japan Pro Wrestling Plans Change, News On Their Partnership

Right now the plan is for ROH to book only 2-3 wrestlers from New Japan Pro Wrestling for the Toronto ROH shows in May.

Originally, the plan was to bring in the 8 or more wrestlers like last year which was ROH booker Delirious (Hunter Johnston)'s intent but ROH COO Joe Koff is uneasy about spending that level of money in 2015 on New Japan talent. Last year the company barely broke even on the 2 shows.   Johnston believes the partnership can be very lucrative in the long-term and has pitched airing the shows as pay-per-views to recoup the money of bringing in an elite crew like in 2014, but that would disrupt the plan to do the Best in the World June pay-per-view. Gilleland doesn't believe it's worth disrupting their PPV calendar which they are just now establishing and taking on more risk.  Johnston is still working on changing this as New Japan wants the same arrangement as last year, including a few days of training and scouting at the ROH Dojo outside of Philadelphia. Johnston also predicts the dojo will be a much bigger money making venture in 2015. Originally, Johnston planned to do ROH vs New Japan super shows in Chicago and New York in addition to Toronto, but that changed upon Koff deciding to scale back the New Japan shows. Koff met with New Japan officials in the fall and expressed his disappointment and confusion over New Japan partnering with Jeff Jarrett to do pay-per-view. There had been internal talk that ROH was going to extend a similar deal to New Japan but was too slow to put it together.

Opinionated View- If ROH and New Japan start fighting where will the IWC side? It actually sounds like Sinclair is making the right move. ROH isn't going to grow but giving whole show to talent from an outside company.

NJPW’s AXS TV Series Premieres This Week

New Japan’s new AXS TV series premieres this week on AXS TV. The thirteen-episode show will air on the network, listed simply as “New Japan Pro Wrestling.” Check your provider for times and channel number.

The series will have English commentary and include some of the best matches of the past two years, with the first episode airing the match between Okada and Tanahashi for the IWGP Heavyweight Title from Wrestle Kingdom 7.

Opinionated View- Seen one Okada and Tanahasi match you have seen this all and this just show how lazy New Japan is. They couldn't go "Maybe we should another match than one in the series between the two guy that just main evented that PPV."

New Japan Stars Invaded Pro Wrestling NOAH At Today’s Show

Pro Wrestling NOAH held a show this morning at the Korauken Hall. Naomichi Marufuji defended the GHC heavyweight title against NJPW’s Satoshi Kojima. When the match was over, the NJPW faction Suzuki-Gun charged the ring and Minoru Suzuki laid out Marufuji with a piledriver. Meanwhile, TMDK, Shane Haste & Mikey Nicholls beat Takashi Suguira & Masato Tanaka for the GHC tag team championship.
According to f4wonline.com, the idea behind the feud is to help revitalize the NOAH promotion. The Wrestling Observer had previously reported that, “New Japan either has secretly purchased controlling interest in NOAH to keep the struggling company alive, or is at least heavily funding them at this point.”

NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 9 Plagued by Major Technical Issues for Live North American PPV Broadcast

PWInsider reports that there were major technical issues that marred the live North American PPV broadcast for NJPW’s Wrestle Kingdom 9 event. The event was presented in North America by Jeff Jarrett’s Global Force Wrestling.
In terms of cable providers, InDemand PPV did not run the PPV live in HD, since InDemand was running UFC 182 live on its HD channels instead. The live broadcast was left on a third PPV channel that was only available in standard definition instead of HD.
Time Warner Cable in New York City reportedly had some sort of “meltdown” in at least four of the five boroughs. The PPVs were not processed. Time Warner Cable said there was an outage in the area.
The PPV was also available on the FlippsTV App. However, unless consumers were using specific devices, the event was unable to live stream on PPV through FlippsTV. Those who were able to stream event live received an awkward, stuttering and cluttered version of the PPV feed throughout the event. FlippsTV is reportedly willing to offer refunds with users who were unhappy with the live-stream experience.
Wrestle Kingdom 9 will still be available as a repeat on PPV in HD and SD at 7PM EST tonight. The event will also be available on Video on Demand for the next 30 days.

All Japan Pro Wrestling Results 1.03.15: Tokyo, Japan

1. Yoshinobu Kanemaru, Ultimo Dragon, and Masanobu Fuchi over Yohei Nakajima, Naoya Nomura, and Yuma Aoyagi. Kanemaru pinned Aoyagi with a top rope splash.
2. Atsushi Aoki retained the AJPW World Jr. Heavyweight Championship vs. Takao Soma. Soma tapped to a deep Boston Crab.
3. KENSO (formerly Kenzo Suzuki in WWE) retained the Gaora TV Title against Ryuji Hijikata. KENSO scored the win following a Shining Wizard and a diving elbow drop.
4. Akebono, Shigehiro Irie, and Shuji Ishikawa beat Jun Akiyama, Takao Omori, and SUSHI (formerly Kiyoshi in TNA). Akebono pinned Sushi after a Side Russian Leg Sweep.
Intermission
5. Shingo Takagi and Zeus over Suwama and Hikaru Sato. Zeus pinned Sato with a Jackhammer. This match didn’t feature as much of Shingo as I would’ve like it to have, considering what a great match he had with BxB Hulk at Dragon Gate’s Final Gate. Understandable, however, as he’s an outsider in All Japan.
6. Mitsuya Nagai and Takeshi Minamino defeated Kento Miyahara and Kotaro Suzuki to win the All Asia Tag Team Championships. This one went a bit too long at a pretty unexciting pace. The finish came after a bunch of interference by KENSO and a diving knee strike by Nagai.
7. Go Shiozaki defeated Joe Doering to win the AJPW Triple Crown Championship. This match saved the show and was likely the strongest match we’ve seen this trip. It went well over twenty minutes with both guys beating the hell out of each other and the crowd ate up every minute of it. After many great false finishes, Shiozaki scored the pinfall following a series of lariats. Post-match, Zeus and KENSO came out and it appears that they’ll have a No.1 Contender’s match at some point soon to determine Shiozaki’s next challenger. The show closed with the new champion cutting a promo.

Dramatic Dream Team Results 1.03.2015: Tokyo, Japan

The show opened with the whole DDT roster in the ring to welcome the fans.
1. Shunma Katsumata forced Kota Umeda to submit to a Liontamer.
2. Makoto Oishi, Shuji Ishikawa, and Hoshitango beat Gota Ihashi, Yasu Urano, and Akito. This was a fun one. The finish came when Ishikawa hit a very impressive BT Bomb on the 300+ lb. Ihashi.
3. Masa Takanashi, DJ Nira, and Saki Akai defeated Antonio Honda, Takao Soma, and Yoshihiko (the doll). Akai reversed a rana by Yoshihiko (the inanimate doll) and scored the pin, and by virtue of pinning Yoshihiko, won the 24 hour Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship. However, after the match, the legendary Aja Kong made a surprise appearance…
4. Aja Kong beat Saki Akai to win the Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship. Kong immediately hit a brainbuster on Akai and pinned her to win the title, which is defended under 24/7 rules.
5. Sanshiro Takagi and Toru Owashi over Super Sasadango Machine and Bernard Ackah (in a Super Sasadango Machine mask). Machine is a mock of Super Strong Machine and wears a similar mask, except his name Sasadadango means “dumpling bowl,” in typical DDT fashion. Takagi is the owner of DDT and does a Stone Cold type gimmick which is super over. Mid-match, Bernard was unmasked, so Machine hilariously removed his mask to cover up Bernard, before realizing he had exposed his face to everyone in the process. In the end, Takagi scored the win for his team with a modified cradle on Machine
6. Gorgeous Matsuno and The Brahmans (Brahman Shu and Brahman Kei) retained the KO-D 6-Man Tag Team Titles vs. Kota Ibushi, Daisuke Sasaki, and Suguru Miyatake. This one involved a real severed pig head, a teased bump off Korakuen’s balcony, squid ink, protein shakes, a squid ink protein shake power-up, and a slow-motion Last Ride ‘rana reversal. Needless to say it was hilariously enjoyable for what it was. In the end, Matsuno scored the win for his team with a rollup.
Intermission
7. Konosuke Takeshita beat Tomomitsu Matsunaga following two discus lariats and a German suplex hold.
8. Yukio Sakaguchi handily defeated Kazuki Hirata. Funny clash as it was “Dancing K” taking on the shooter of DDT. Sakaguchi put him away with a sleeper hold followed by a stiff Penalty Kick to the chest.
9. KUDO beat MIKAMI. MIKAMI brought a ladder to the ring with him so the match was built around some impressive and rough ladder spots. KUDO scored the pinfall following a diving double knee drop.
10. KO-D Openweight Champion HARASHIMA pinned KO-D Tag Champion Tetsuya Endo. Quick but action-packed. HARASHIMA won with his running double knee strike.
11. Michael Nakazawa vs. Shigehiro Irie ended in a time-limit draw. This was a very entertaining match, but I have a really hard time watching unprotected headbutts and Irie uses them generously.
12. Michael Nakazawa’s Army (HARASHIMA, Yasu Urano, Akito, Kota Ibushi, Daisuke Sasaki, Suguru Miyatake, KUDO, Yukio Sakaguchi, Masa Takanashi, Tomomitsu Matsunaga, Bernard Ackah, Super Sasadango Machine, Saki Akai, DJ Nira, Shunma Katsumata and Gota Ihashi) defeated Danshoku Dino’s Army (Antonio Honda, Konosuke Takeshita, Tetsuya Endo, Gorgeous Matsuno, Brahman Shu, Brahman Kei, Shigehiro Irie, Soma Takao, Sanshiro Takagi, Toru Owashi, Kazuki Hirata, MIKAMI, Yoshihiko, Hoshitango, Makoto Oishi Kouta Umeda and Shuji Ishikawa). This one was so fun it felt illegal. Hilarious spots throughout including every member of the DDT roster being sent crashing into a cornered Nakazawa and a mid-match breakdown brawl throughout Korakuen as music hit and Dancing K got his groove on in the middle of the ring. This was awesome and the crowd ate it up. The finish came when Nakazawa removed the thong from under his trunks and performed a clawhold STO with his thong on his hand. As a prize for winning, Nakazawa won a stack of tickets to sell to DDT’s Saitama Super Arena show in February.
The show closed with another in-ring skit involving the whole roster with Michael Nakazawa coming out the butt of the joke.

The show opened with Shinjiro Otani (of WCW fame) cutting a promo in the ring. (Zero-1 is his promotion).
Masato Tanaka and Takashi Sugiura were also honored with Tokyo Sports's Tag Team of the Year Award before the show.

2. Jason Lee retained the NWA International Light Heavyweight Championship over Atsushi Maruyama and Mineo Fujita in a three-way. Fun match.
3. Dangan Yankees beat Voodoo Murderers in an 8-man tag.
4. Atsushi Onita, Ichiro Yaguchi, and Dump Matsumoto beat TARU, Brother YASSHI, and Voodoo Mask.
5. 5-on-5 Outsider vs. Zero-1 elimination match. Outsiders (Yoshihiro Takayama, Daisuke Sekimoto, Takashi Sugiura, Ryoji Sai, and Akebono) vs. Zero-1 (Masato Tanaka, Hideki Suzuki, Kohei Sato, Yusaku Obata, and Shinjiro Otani):
Shinjiro Otani pinned Yoshihiro Takayama after a diving dropkick to the back of the head and two Dragon Suplexes.
Daisuke Sekimoto beat Shinjiro Otani with a German Suplex Hold.
Daisuke Sekimoto pinned Yusaku Obata.
Hideki Suzuki eliminated Daisuke Sekimoto.
Akebono pinned Hideki Suzuki.
Masato Tanaka eliminated Akebono with the Sliding D.
Masato Tanaka wrestled Takashi Sugiura to a 15 minute draw. This was an awesome clash between the two members of Tokyo Sports's Tag Team of the Year. I'd have been happy if the show ended with this.

1. Naoya Nomura forced Yuma Aoyagi to submit to a Boston Crab.
2. Takeshi Minamino beat Yohei Nakajima.
3. Kotaro Suzuki and Ryuji Hijikata defeated Yoshinobu Kanemaru & Masanobu Fuchi. Fuchi is 60 years old and can only do body slams, but he makes them very entertaining. Fuchi was rolled up in a crucifix pin for the loss.
4. Atsushi Aoki and Hikaru Sato over Keisuke Ishii and Takao Soma.
5.  Zeus, Ultimo Dragon, and SUSHI beat Akebono, Yutaka Yoshie, and Shigehiro Irie. The finish came when Zeus hit a Jackhammer on the 350+ lbs Yoshie.
6. Akebono eliminated Sushi last to win a battle royal. The match was filled with everyone who had already worked the show. Interestingly, Japanese battle royals include traditional elimination as well as pinfall eliminations.
7. AJPW Triple Crown Champion Joe Doering and Suwama beat Go Shiozaki and Kento Miyahara. Suwama scored the pin following a Last Ride.
8. Jun Akiyama and Takao Omori retained the AJPW Tag Team Championships over KENSO (formerly Kenzo Suzuki) and Mitsuya Nagai. Kenso took the pinfall after a sliding lariat

2. El Desperado & Taichi (Suzuki-Gun) defeated Jusin Thunder Liger & Tiger Mask IV.
Desperado pinned Liger with Guittarra De La Angel after hitting Liger with the NWA Jr Heavyweight title belt. After the match Desperado & Taichi tore up Liger’s costume and cut the hair from his mask.
3. Yuji Nagata, Manabu Nakanishi & BUSHI defeated Tomoaki Honma, Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima.
Nagata pinned Honma after a back drop suplex hold. BUSHI landed on his head and neck coming off the top rope during the match and had to be stretchered off.
4. Kazushi Sakuraba, Toru Yano & YOSHI-HASHI defeated TAKA Michinoku, Takashi Iizuka & Minoru Suzuki (Suzuki-Gun).
Sakuraba made TAKA submit to a Kimura Lock.

More Info on 1/4 New Japan PPV

Jeff Jarrett's Global Force Wrestling and New Japan are hoping to get 10,000 PPV buys in North America for the Wrestlekingdom PPV on January 4 at the Tokyo Dome according to a report by Dave Meltzer. 10,000 would be considered a solid success, 7,000-8,000 buys would be considered OK and anything lower than that would be considered a disappointment for New Japan's debut on US PPV. Depending on how the show does on PPV will determine if New Japan decides to do future PPVs in the US. It is said that their goal number is not high because there is very minimal added expenses to air the show live on US PPV on the New Japan end.

Jeff Jarrett is still looking at potential color commentators for Jim Ross on the English language broadcast of the show. Ross has input on the final decision for color commentator, but the final decision solely will be made by Jarrett who it will be. Jarrett spoke with former UFC star Chael Sonnen recently about doing the show, as Sonnen & Ross recently did commentary on the Battlegrounds MMA PPV show in October. TNA commentator Mike Tenay is said to be the overall leading candidate to do the show, with Jarrett and Ross being on the same page in regards to Tenay possibly doing the color commentary. ROH commentator Kevin Kelly was also thought of to possibly do the color commentary, but he will be unable to due to ROH filming TV in Nashville on January 3.
